Was ihr verrücktestes Bühnenerlebnis in Deutschland war oder welche deutschen Bands maßgeblichen Einfluss auf ihr Leben haben, könnt ihr hier nachlesen. 01. Es gibt viele verschiedene Metal-Stile. Warum spielt ihr gerade melodischen Metal?

Ich stimme dir zu, es ist ein Jungle da draußen. Aber es ist nicht so, dass wir zusammensitzen und uns dann entscheiden: „Hey, lass uns einige melodische Metal-Lieder spielen. Es ist eher eine natürliche Wiedergabe dessen, womit wir uns im Leben beschäftigen. Wenn wir unser Material schreiben, kommt im Endeffekt das heraus, was die Leute als melodischen Metal ansehen. Aber wir machen uns keine Gedanken darüber, in welche Schublade man uns packt. Wir schreiben die Musik, die wir hören wollen und das ist das, was auf unsere Alben gedruckt wird.

02. Was ist eure Definition von gutem melodischem Metal?

Ich glaube, dass “Lust And Loathing” ein gutes Beispiel dafür ist, wofür guter melodischer Metal steht. Großartige Dynamik, hochkarätige, gewaltige Refrains und genug Variation, damit es nicht langweilig wird. Es ist einfach, einem bestimmten Schema zu folgen, aber ich vermute, dass es magische Songs nur entstehen, wenn versuchst, dich etwas von deinem Schema zu lösen und unterschiedliche Grenzen deiner Musik zu erforschen.

03. Euer neues Album ist Teil einer Triology. Welche Idee stand dahinter?

Schon bei der Gründung von THE UNGUIDED war die Idee aufgekommen, drei Alben zu machen, die konzeptionell irgendwie miteinander zusammenhingen, z.B im Hinblick auf das Artwork, die Lyriks und den anderen Dingen. Anstatt einfach beliebig Alben herauszubringen, entwickelten wir eine Vision, mit einem langfristigen Plan, bevor wir überhaupt einen Song geschrieben hatten. Es dauerte fünf Jahre, um zum Ende zu kommen, und ich glaube, wenn man nun das Resultat sieht, dass es ein erfolgreicher Weg war, die Alben auf diese Weise entstehen zu lassen. Das bedeutete viel Arbeit, aber auch viel Spaß, mit allerlei Hindernissen. Am Ende hat sich aber alles gelohnt.

04. “Lust And Loathing”: Warum habt ihr euch diesen Albumtitel ausgesucht?

Wie die Titel der beiden Vorgängeralben, “Hell Frost” and “Fragile Immortality”, hat auch dieser Berührungspunkte mit den ersten drei Alben von SONIC SYNDICATE, und zwar wie Gegensätze dazu. Das war auch die Idee bei diesem Longplayer. Aber die ganze Sache “Something and other something” zu nennen, kam mir wie eine Parodie vor. Das gleiche gilt für „Fragile Immortality“, dessen Referenz „Only Inhuman“ war. Wenn ich es „Only Human“ genannt hätte, hätte es sich falsch angefühlt. Deshalb suchte ich etwas, das eine ähnliche Bedeutung hatte und auch gut klang. Die Suche war beendet, als ich “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” in meiner Filmsammlung entdeckte. Ich dachte, dass das ein cooler Name ist und ich spielte mit den Worten, um den Albumtitel zu finden. Das funktionierte sehr gut mit vor dem Hintergrund der Paradoxie, die sich mit diesem Album verband.

05. Was ist das Besondere an diesem Album?

Ich liebe dieses Album, deshalb bin ich nicht objektiv. Ich bin ein großer Fan von THE UNGUIDED und die Fans unterstützen uns wirklich sehr. Ich glaube, dass man das clevere Songwriting und die eingängigen Melodien lieben kann. Dahinter steckt eine ganz Menge harter Arbeit. Wir konnten uns den Luxus leisten, einiges Material zu überarbeiten. Und als wir dann nur noch neun Songs hatten, konnten wir uns wirklich auf individuelle Tracks konzentrieren und auch auf eine Menge Details achtgeben. Aber man muss das Album hören, um sivch eine eigene Meinung dazu bilden zu können. Jede Band, die du fragst, wird immer sagen, dass das aktuelle Album das beste ist. Ich bin da keine Ausnahme.

06. Gibt es einen Album-Track, den ihr besonders mögt?

Ich mag alle Tracks, aber jeden auf eine ganz besondere Art. Allerdings stechen “Black Eyed Angel”, “Operation: E.A.E.”, “Phobos Grip” und “Enraged” etwas heraus. Im Moment bin ich sehr zufrieden mit „Phobos Grip“, weil dieser Track etwas weiter von dem entfernt ist, was wir normaler Weise machen, aber trotzdem einen sehr erinnerungswürdigen Refrain hat. Das sagt bei einem Song mit 99 Prozent Screams  doch eine Menge aus. Ich denke, dass das ein cooles Statement von uns ist und eine interessanter Ausflug über den Tellerrand von uns ist.

07. Was verbirgt sich hinter dem Covere-Artwork?

Das steht in Verbindung zu dem Konzept der drei Alben. Aber es ist auch ein kleiner Schritt zurück zu dem “Love and Other Disasters”-Album, auf dessen Cover man eine synthetische Person sehen kann, die sich ihr Herz herausreißt und einen Zahnriemen in die klaffende Brust steckt. Nun, auf dem Cover von „Lust And Loathing“ entfernt der Held einen Zahnriemen aus einer synthetischen Person, mit Hilfe seiner schon lange verlorenen Liebe, welche wirklich ein Porträt des Mädchens des „Eden-Fire-Covers“ ist. Das Zahnrad hat eine fundamentale Bedeutung in der Geschichte, und es ist besser, wenn man es im Booklet nachliest, wenn man alle schmutzigen Details möchte.

08. Gibt es ein (Metal) Album oder Song, der euer Leben veränderte?

Drei Alben veränderten, wahrscheinlich nicht mein Leben, aber meine Einstellung zur Musik: Das erste ist “Blind Guardian – Tales from the Twilight World”, das zweite “Dark Tranquillity – Haven”und das dritte “The Crown – Deathrace King”. Es ist sehr schwer Alben zu finden, die so herausragend und aus einem Guss sind wie diese.

09. Gibt es deutsche Bands, die euch beeinflussen oder die ihr privat hört?

Ich bin der größte Power Metal Fan, den es gibt und die meisten dieser Bands sind aus Deutschland. Running Wild, Helloween, Gamma Ray, Primal Fear und meine Lieblingsband Blind Guardian höre ich fast jeden Tag.

10. Ihr kommt auf “Lust And Loathing Tour 2016”. Was war eure verrückteste Tour-Erfahrung in Deutschland?

Es gibt eine verrücktes Tourerlebnis. Höchstwahrscheinlich war das auch in Deutschland. Ich war auf Tour mit SONIC SYNDICATE und DARK TRANQUILLITY, wir betraten die Bühne und zwischen zwei Songs hörte ich eine tiefe Stimme, sehr verstörend. Wenig später kam Mikael Stanne als Darth Vader verkleidet auf die Bühne und ging auf mich zu und sagte: „Ich bin Darth Sjunnesson“ und ging dann einfach weg! Sehr witzig.

11. Welche drei Dinge aus Deutschland  könntest du loben?

BLIND GUARDIAN, Brezeln und Bier

12. Welche noch nicht gefragte Frage wolltest du immer schon einmal beantworten?

Habe ich schon einmal jemanden umgebracht? (gruselig, unangenehm, das Interview beendend…)

01. There are many different metal styles. Why do you play melodic Metal?
Rich: Agree, it’s a jungle out there. But it’s not like we sit down and decide; “Hey! Let’s do some melodic metal songs”, it’s more a natural rendition of whatever we dig into end up being. When we write our stuff, it ends up being in the whereabouts of what people view as melodic metal. We don’t really care what box you want to put it in. We write the music we want to listen to and that’s what’s imprinted on our albums.

02. What is your definition of good melodic Metal?
Rich: I think “Lust and Loathing” is good example of what melodic metal is all about. Great dynamics, edgy, huge choruses, hooky songs and variation enough to not get boring. It’s easy to keep to a formula, I guess magic really happen when you try to venture outside the formulas a bit and explore different angels of your own music.

03. Your new album is part of a trilogy. What is the idea behind this trilogy?
Rich: The idea was already from The Unguided formation, to do 3 albums, which was sort of connected with concept, artworks, lyrical ties and everything. Instead of just putting out random albums, we established a vision, with a long lasting plan, before even writing any songs. To finish this took 5 years and I think now when you see the result, I think it was a great success to handle the album this way. A lot of work, but great fun, challenging and rewarding. I think the fans love the collection value of it and really appreciate the work.  

04. "Lust And Loathing": Why did you choose this title?
Rich: Like the titles of its two successors, “Hell Frost” and “Fragile Immortality”, they are a bit based on the 3 first albums of Sonic Syndicate. Like the contrasts to them. That was also the idea with this album, but since naming the entire thing “Something and other something”, would feel a bit like a parody to me. Same thing with “Fragile Immortality” really, which have “Only Inhuman” as a reference. If I would have named that “Only Human”, that would feel wrong in my mind. So I was looking around for something that had bit of the same meaning, and also roll good off the tongue. That’s when I spotted “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” in my film collection. I always thought that was a cool name, so I kind of did a word game of that for the title. It also works really well with the paradox going on in this album.

05. What makes the new album very special?
Rich: Well, I love all our albums, so I wouldn’t be objective. I’m as big fan of The Unguided as the people supporting us really. But I think you can appreciate the clever songwriting and striking melodies, which is extra hard work behind on just this release. We kind of had the luxury to “overwork” some stuff and since it was just 9 tracks, we could really focus on the individual tracks and see to a lot of details. But really, you have to listen for yourself to get your own opinion in it. Any band you ask, will always say that their latest album is the most special and best. I would not be an exception from that template.

06. Is there any song on the album you like most? Why?*
Rich: I like them all in different kind of ways. But “Black Eyed Angel”, “Operation: E.A.E.”, “Phobos Grip” and “Enraged” really hit the spot for me. I’m actually really happy with “Phobos Grip”, since that’s a bit off from what we usually do but still it manages to have a really memorable and hooky chorus. That’s says a lot with a song with like 99% screaming vocals. I think that’s a cool statement and adventures move from our side.

07. What is the message behind the cover-art?
Rich: It’s tied to the concept story written for those 3 albums. But basically it’s a bit of throwback to the “Love and Other Disasters” album, where you can see a synthetic person taking out his heart and putting a cog in its place. Now on “Lust and Loathing”, our hero, removes a cog from a synthetic person, with the help of his long lost love, which is really a portrait of the girl from the “Eden Fire” cover. The “cog” have a fundamental function in the story, and it’s better that you read it (included in the booklet) if you want all the juicy details.

08. Is there any (metal) album or song that changes your life?
Rich: 3 albums changed, possibly not my life, but how I listen to and view music. First one is “Blind Guardian – Tales from the Twilight World”, second is “Dark Tranquillity – Haven” and the final one is “The Crown – Deathrace King”. I’ve yet to find albums that are as complete as these.

09. Are there any German bands that influence your music or that you hear privately?
Rich: I’m the biggest power metal fan there is, and as you know, most of those bands are German bands. Running Wild, Helloween, Gamma Ray, Primal Fear and my all-time favorites Blind Guardian is something I listen to almost every day.

10.You are going on “Lust-And-Loathing-Tour 2016”. What was the craziest tour-experience in Germany?
Rich: Well if there’s a crazy tour story, it most certainly took place in Germany haha. I remember on a tour with Sonic Syndicate and Dark Tranquility (among others), we hit the stage, and between 2 songs I heard a deep voice from the PA, very confusing. Moments after, Mikael Stanne dressed like Darth Vader entered the stage and walked up to me, and stated: “I’m Darth Sjunnesson”, and then just walked off. Very random, and very fun hehe.

11. Recommend three things from Germany.
Rich: Blind Guardian, Pretzels and beer.

12. What not-asked question did you ever want to answer?
Rich: Did I ever kill someone? (Creepy, awkward, ending of the interview...)
